‘I feel lucky to be a refugee,’ says Toronto teen

Group of young people smiling and holding up peace signs.

Let me introduce you to Aws.

He is 17, a YouTuber, a rapper, a devoted son, and a kind young man. He is passionate about cars, wants to own a car company, has big dreams, and is working hard to make them a reality.

He is positive, motivated, and resilient.

Aws is also a refugee.

The term “refugee” might conjure up many images for you. A group of people on a boat crossing the Mediterranean; women and children walking thousands of miles to reach safety; families living in tents at a refugee camp.

If you look closely however you might see that on that boat is a high school student, a doctor, and an entrepreneur. The woman who has been walking for days is an artist and her child’s favourite colour is pink. The family in the refugee camp have dinner together every night and talk about their day.
