I grew up everywhere from a farm in the Ottawa Valley to the beaches of Florida, and I am still growing up on the border of Roncesvalles and Parkdale in Toronto. I learned French while skiing in Quebec, and Spanish while backpacking in Costa Rica, but English is the only language I know well enough to support others in learning it. I am grateful NYCH gives me an opportunity to do this! And if you want to learn more about me I will give you an opportunity to do that! Weekly facilitation of the English conversation group gave me the opportunity to develop; my leadership skills, my organizational skills, my program solving skills, and my creative thinking skills. The mentorship program has given me additional confidence, interpersonal skills, time management skills, and a greater sense of responsibility. The most useful skill for me at NYCH is active listening.

What are you most passionate about?

I went to George Brown for social service work because I want to help create a better Canada for everyone: no matter your social location. I love healthy eating and nutritional science: I spend a lot of time in my kitchen. I have a background in the arts: I was a visual arts major at Etobicoke School of the Arts but recently I have been spending my creative energy on music. If I had to answer

“What am I most passionate about?” in two words it would be simple: “my cat”.

What are you currently working on?

Over the past few years I have perfected the art of brewing kombucha (a fermented tea that once you try you can’t deny). Currently, I have retired from growing gourmet mushrooms to devote my time to developing my musical talent. I write my own songs (the most popular one is titled “How to pet a cat”) on the guitar. Just last week I opened at my friends show with a performance of spoken word poetry but most currently, I am working on this cup of coffee!

Mickey Doolittle shares how his volunteerism at NYCH has helped build Mickey’s confidence, creativity, and leadership skills.

[23,35
post-843","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-spotlight","category-volunteer
["GET
