At North York Community House (NYCH), we\u2019re grateful for the dedicated placement students that help us thrive and give back to the community. Students provide us with fresh perspectives while receiving hands-on experience in the non-profit sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wasana Subashini Warnakulasooriya was a placement student from the Social Service Worker and Immigrants and Refugees program at Seneca College. She works alongside Jeya Surendran, Community Settlement Lead at NYCH. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an international student, I feel seen, validated and appreciated at NYCH!\u201d says Wasana. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“I learned to give my services and be humble about it. I saw how Jeya balanced empathy for the clients and still kept her work ethics and professionalism. I think I will take that with me,”<\/span> Wasana says.<\/span><\/p>\n

After completing her placement, Wasana was hired as a part-time Settlement Worker, where she is expanding her knowledge on settlement issues faced by newcomers and community residents. This includes areas such as housing, immigration, disability, mental health, and government benefits, along with learning how to navigate and access these resources. Wasana’s newfound confidence and enthusiasm has led her to actively seek out new initiatives and projects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The ability to assess and address the needs of clients is a valuable skill,\u201d says Jeya. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWasana showcases exceptional talent in conducting needs assessments and assisting clients with their issues.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
