Honouring the Legacy of Councillor Howard Moscoe

A long‑time municipal leader whose vision and commitment were instrumental in the creation of our organization.

North York Community House is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Councillor Howard Moscoe (November 28, 1939 – May 23, 2026), a long‑time municipal leader whose vision and commitment were instrumental in the creation of our organization. As the councillor representing the Bathurst‑Lawrence and Wilson Heights communities, Howard was entrusted in 1988 with stewarding an anonymous donation intended to strengthen the neighbourhood he served. True to his values, he launched an open, community‑driven process that invited residents to shape how those funds should be used.

That process led to the establishment of North York Community House. Howard championed the idea that the community itself should determine its priorities, and he supported the Steering Committee that developed the mission, goals, and structure of what would become NYCH. His leadership helped transform a single act of generosity into a lasting investment in newcomer support, resident leadership, and neighbourhood connection. More than three decades later, the impact of that decision continues to ripple through the lives of thousands of families across North York and beyond.

Today, we honour Howard not only as a public servant, but as a founding champion of NYCH — someone who believed deeply in the power of community and who advocated fiercely for the people he represented.

“Everyone at NYCH is remembering and celebrating Howard Moscoe, who helped found our organization, and who was always an enthusiastic ambassador and supporter of our work. Howard was so well respected for how deeply he knew the community and what a passionate advocate he was. We are so grateful to have been connected with him for over three decades. We all send our care and sympathy to his family. May his memory be a blessing.”Bonnie Hunter, Executive Director

Howard’s family has established a memorial fund in his honour, inviting donations to the organizations he cared about. We are grateful to be among them. By supporting NYCH, donors help continue the community‑building work that Howard helped set in motion.
