Land Acknowledgement

We at North York Community House acknowledge that the land on which we are gathered is the traditional territory of many First Nations including the Haudenosaunee of the Six Nations Confederacy, the Huron, Erie, Wendat, Anishnaabeg, and the Mississaugas of the Credit whose long-standing history have helped shape the world we live in now.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we honour Indigenous histories, worldviews, and cultures, and acknowledge the enduring presence of First Nations, the Métis Nation, and the Inuit Peoples. 

Why are we doing the land acknowledgement?

This is our way, at NYCH, of respecting and honouring the traditional caretakers of the land we are on. We recognize the importance of bringing awareness of Indigenous histories to our staff and community members, in order to begin a journey to learn more about the truth and realities of Indigenous experiences in Canada, past and present. We hope this moves us toward relationship-building and reconciliation that is defined by Indigenous people and communities.
