Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Bernie!
Bernie shares his experiences volunteering at North York Community House.

Tell us a little about yourself!
I was a newcomer more than 20 years ago, coming from the tropical island called the Philippines. I got my Permanent Resident Status through a Federal skilled immigrant category for finance professionals, and became a citizen after three years. My career background is in commercial banking and finance, including personal investments, real and commercial estate mortgages. I’m a social and professional mentor and event support volunteer here at North York Community House.
My family enjoys travelling all over, experiencing the sights and sounds of different places, taking pictures but not for social media, just for memories and tasting different kinds of flavorful cuisines from all over the world. I am currently working on finishing my first running marathon and learning to play pickleball. I’m also a solid Raptors fan! I like reading anything regarding world history and culture.
Why did you decide to volunteer with North York Community House?
Two years ago I was looking for ways to give back to my community, and took on volunteering as an experimental project. I looked up the nearest volunteer opportunity then found the interesting NYCH website, filled with various newcomer services with matching joyful pictures.
The deciding factor was Danielle, the Volunteer Coordinator, she’s the best cheerleader who is very warm and thoughtful. Then there’s the dynamic ladies Maria, Olesia and Cheryl from North York Community House. We are all on the same page, which is to help newcomers settle in Canada.
What has been the most meaningful part of your volunteer experience?
A lot! For starters, when I hear news of a newcomer having their first job in Canada. Having that first stepping stone to gain Canadian work experience is crucial. Also seeing them gain more confidence in communicating in English is very rewarding. Lastly, seeing my mentees fall in love with Canada, its culture and possibilities, despite its imperfections.
Any final words regarding your volunteer experience here at North York Community House?
Thank you very much to North York Community House for the various opportunities to give back to my beloved community of North York without any expectations—just a smile from participants is enough! Canada has been good to me and my family. It has allowed us to achieve goals through the willpower to succeed. We will never forget how it feels to be a newcomer to this land of opportunities. Volunteering feeds my mind and soul and gives me higher purpose in life. It also gives me a fulfilling break from the daily grind of life’s busyness.
