Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Zahra!
Meet Zahra, a dedicated newcomer volunteer who brings empathy, positivity, and a passion for supporting others to every space she joins.

Zahra has been volunteering with us since February 2025! She started as an events volunteer for Family Day, and has since volunteered at many events and workshops. She also supports the Canada Connects Program as an English Conversation Circle Facilitator, Social Mentor, and is a Volunteer Program assistant.
Tell us a little about yourself!
My name is Zahra, and I moved to Canada with my husband four years ago. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Iran. At the moment, I am taking part in different programs to strengthen my skills and abilities.
Outside of work, I love reading because I believe the more you read, the more you realize how much you still don’t know. I enjoy watching movies, and walking helps me keep my mind calm. I try to enjoy life, whether it is something as simple as baking a cake or spending quiet moments with myself.
Life is full of challenges, but how we respond to those challenges depends on the health of our mind and spirit. That’s why I believe it’s important to always keep both in good shape.

Why did you decide to volunteer with North York Community House?
I decided to volunteer with NYCH because I wanted to give back to the community, meet new people, and support other newcomers. I had heard that NYCH is a strong organization in newcomer support, and since I was once a newcomer myself, I understand the struggles newcomers face. What may seem like a small challenge for someone who has lived in Canada for years can feel overwhelming for newcomers. I know I can help them, and that gives me a sense of usefulness and satisfaction. Just as our bodies need food, I believe our hearts and souls also need nourishment—and helping others is one of the best ways to do that.
What has been the most meaningful part of your volunteer experience?
The most meaningful part for me has been connecting with people from diverse cultures and seeing the positive impact of our work on the community.
What’s something new you’ve learned while volunteering here at NYCH?
While volunteering at NYCH, I have learned how important teamwork and effective communication are in creating a friendly environment. Volunteering has also increased my confidence in interacting with different people. I have learned more about community resources in Toronto and how important collaboration is in building inclusive spaces.
What’s next for you, and do you see yourself continuing to volunteer with us in the future?
In the future, I would like to continue focusing on my personal and professional goals while still volunteering. Volunteering has become a meaningful part of my life, and I am sure I will continue doing it!
