Volunteer Spotlight: Sera Gandhi

Sera Gandhi gives back through mentorship in NYCH’s after-school programs.

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, my name is Sera! I work as a Clinical Research Assistant at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), where I support research focused on improving interventions for children and youth experiencing mood, anxiety, and behavioral challenges. Outside of work, I love baking, going for runs, or exploring secondhand bookstores.

Why did you decide to volunteer with North York Community House?

Growing up, I spent a lot of time in after-school programs, and the mentors and experiences I had during that time played a big role in shaping who I am today. When I came across the opportunity to volunteer with North York Community House, I saw it as a meaningful way to pay it forward and hopefully make a similar impact on the next generation.

Also, as someone who works with children in healthcare settings everyday—I wanted a chance to connect with them outside of that context—in a space that feels fun, creative, and community-driven.

What has been the most meaningful part of your volunteer experience?

One of my favorite moments was coming back after a three-week winter break and being greeted with beaming smiles, hugs, and one child excitedly yelling my name and running toward me. It completely caught me off guard in the best way and reminded me just how meaningful this experience has been. It truly has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.

What’s something new you’ve learned while volunteering here at NYCH?

So many things! From learning how to grow paper rainbows to learning the coolest dance moves and even to picking up bits of Tagalog and Spanish from the children, I’m constantly learning from the kids and from our incredible program facilitator, Alexia. Every week brings something new and unexpected—and I love that.

What’s next for you, and do you see yourself continuing to volunteer with us in the future?

This fall, I’ll be starting graduate school at the University of Western Ontario, where my research will focus on the social and emotional development of children, especially those from first-generation immigrant families. Until I move to London, ON, in September, I’m looking forward to continue volunteering with NYCH—and I definitely plan to stay involved with youth programming wherever I go next!
